Under: Hate Crimes
As the New Anti Hate Crime Bill that includes the LGBT community is on the way to Obamas desk to signed into law there have been alot of gay bashings all over America. This right here gets me all riled up and totally disgusted with homophobia. To think that there are people out there that are willing to cause physical harm and even kill someone because they are different then them. Its total ignorance and its totally unacceptable. The most unacceptable thing with this story is that they are not considering a hate crime!
Brandon Patrick of Tulsa Oklahoma was just taking a 10 min walk to his friends house.when he was jumped by a woman in her early 40s and another woman and a man in their teens, and early 20's. They started beating, biting, and slashing at Patrick with a blade. :Leaving him with several cuts on his head and body. This is totally disgusting to think that these people are out there and not being charged with a hate crime because of Oklahoma's Hate Crime Law does not cover sexuality. At the time of Patrick's attack our federal hate crime bill has not been passed as of yet. Its currently sitting on President Obamas Desk. Hopefully he will sign it first thing Friday morning making it law.
Unfortunately that does no good for Brandon Patrick. This is a total disgusting shame of ignorance and hate. The police are currently looking for his attackers. Unfortunately they will not be charged with a Hate Crime so their punishment could be light.
The Oklahoma Equality Group is wanting to strengthen the law to include sexual orientation. They are not asking for special privledges but for the punishment to fit the crime.
Patrick will be haunted with this for the rest of his life. The good thing is that he is a fighter and is telling his story in hopes to help better his community and state. Fox News refused to print what the one attacker was yelling at him because of its content. This is what Patrick heard right before he was attacked. He did not provoke this and was shrugging it off like he usually did when he was faced with homophobia.
Patrick I hope you heal fast, and glad that you are ok and able to talk about this for our whole LGBT Community here in the United States. Thank you for standing up and not being silent. That takes alot of courage. I do hope that more people hear your story that have been a victim of Hate Crimes and get the strength from you to stand up and not just lie down and walk away from it.
